Bringing the Outdoors In
Houseplants are a wonderful way to add life, colour, and calm to any home. But knowing how to keep them thriving can feel daunting. Here are our top tips from the team at The Flower Pot Swindon.
Light
Most houseplants prefer bright, indirect light — near a window but out of direct midday sun. Low-light tolerant plants like pothos, snake plants, and peace lilies are perfect for darker corners.
Watering
Overwatering is the number one mistake. Always check the soil before watering — stick your finger an inch into the compost. If it feels damp, wait. Most plants prefer to dry out slightly between waterings.
Humidity
Tropical plants like ferns, orchids, and calatheas love humidity. Place them in bathrooms or kitchens, mist them regularly, or use a pebble tray with water beneath the pot.
Feeding
During the growing season (spring and summer), feed your plants with a balanced liquid fertiliser every two to four weeks. Reduce or stop feeding in autumn and winter when growth slows.
Repotting
If roots are pushing out of the drainage holes or growth has slowed despite good care, it's time to repot. Choose a pot only one size up, and use fresh potting compost.
